‘Completely fantastic’ A.F. Steadman author of the Skandar series

The spell-binding world-building of Philip Pullman with the page-turning kid appeal of Skandar and the Unicorn Thief. Discover a world of magic and secrets, friendship and unimaginable quests in this spectacular new fantasy series from the most exciting new voice in children’s books.

A boy who doesn’t believe in magic. An impossible world that will change his mind.
Eleven-year-old Benjamiah Creek believes in science, logic and the power of reason. He definitely does not believe in magic. But when he receives a mysterious gift in the post – a doll that can transform into a bird – he is led into the impossible (and most definitely magical) world of Wreathenwold, where dark secrets are lost amongst a vast labyrinth of streets.

Benjamiah soon finds himself swept along in a dangerous quest – led by the fierce and brilliant Elizabella, who is determined to solve the disappearance of her missing brother.

Will Benjamiah ever find his way home and discover his puzzling connection with this strange, enchanted world?

‘The Whisperwicks is a brilliantly spun and wholly original story. This is an exciting new voice in children’s fiction’ Abi Elphinstone, bestselling author of Sky Song

‘A breathtaking debut – I love the heartfelt friendship, fantastical worldbuilding, and sheer amount of warmth that runs throughout this book’ Natasha Hastings, author of The Miraculous Sweetmakers

‘Lees makes the world of Wreathenwold come alive . . . An adventure story full of twists, action and mild scares that will suit a reader who enjoys Harry Potter, or Percy Jackson, weaving together magic, mythology and human relationships.’ Children’s Books Ireland

I remember and loved the crack in the wall. I liked the boy but I can't remember his name. I liked that the crack was magic. I would like to share this book with my grandad.

I loved the deep story that this book delivered, as well as the long and thrilling journey that the characters embarked on. For once, the ending of a book felt rewarding because where Benjamiah’s mum actually came from is revealed.

At first it was a tiny bit confusing but the further I went the more sucked into the story I got! It is not really my kind of book but honestly no matter the book preference you will get engulfed by the story and the characters and all! Would definitely recommend (especially as a nice cosy nighttime read).

This fiction book is about a boy (Benjamiah) who doesn’t believe in magic but before long he finds himself in the secret, enchanting labyrinth of Wreathenwold. When he arrives he is amazed by this unique place and shortly meets a determined girl (Elizabella) who is on a mission to find her missing brother (Edwid). He joins her on her quest and together they set off, finding clues to help them uncover the truth to Edwid’s disappearance. I enjoyed this book because it was exciting throughout and included themes of friendship and courage. My favourite character was Elizabella because she is very strong - minded and committed to the journey. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading adventure books.
